This box was originally carved by the great Haida artist John Robson, stepfather of the legendary Charles Edenshaw. It is a fine example of the type of Victorian chest that the Haida specialized in during the latter part of the 18th century: 19 X 10.25 X 9.75 cm. These argillite reproduction pieces in high density resin are moulded from casts of original argillite Haida carvings from the Canadian Museum of History’s collection. Argillite is a soft slate found only on Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands); it was first quarried in the 1820’s on Slatechuck Mountain.
