Magistrate’s robe

This robe was supposedly worn by magistrate Hugh Richardson when he presided over the trial of Louis Riel for high treason in July 1885. Found guilty by a jury, the Métis leader was sentenced to death by Richardson. Riel was hanged in Regina on November 16, 1885.
