On April 1, 1999, the Territory of Nunavut was created as part of a settlement of land claims launched in the mid-1970s. Nunavut is the largest of Canada’s three northern territories. It has an elected legislative assembly, with no political parties, and uses Inuktitut as its language of administration. In 2006, about 84 percent of the territory’s population self-identified as Inuit.
