Telesat Canada was created in 1969 to operate a domestic, commercial satellite system. It launched its first satellite, the Anik A1, in November 1972. It was joined in April 1973 by the Anik A2 and in May 1975 by the Anik A3. With these satellites, Canada became the first country to use satellites for domestic communications.
