What We Do “Behind the Scenes”

Gatineau, Quebec, May 13, 2010 — On International Museums Day, Tuesday May 18, come and see how a modern museum works. The specialists of the Canadian Museum of Civilization will be presenting a variety of activities throughout the day, in Canada Hall, giving you an inside look at how we produce exhibitions, collections and even live performances!

Drop in on a working rehearsal by the Museum’s theatre troupe, Dramamuse, and see how we bring history to life. In Union Hall “Labor Temple”, 10 to 11 a.m.; 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. And meet interactive historical characters in the Canada Hall, at 10 to 11 a.m., 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30–3:30 p.m.

From Rebellions to Confederation
Enjoy an inside look at how we produce displays, as you discover the creative work required to build an immersive historical setting such as the brand-new Canada Hall module, From Rebellions to Confederation. At 11 a.m. in French and at 2 p.m. in English.

The Horse
See how we set up special exhibitions presented at the Museum. Visit our Special Exhibitions Corridor on the main level for a sneak peek at the new exhibition The Horse. At 11 a.m. in French and 2 p.m. in English.

Rich archival collections
Before vinyl there was wax! Learn more about our rich archival collections and Canada’s recorded heritage. Listen to audio recordings on wax phonograph cylinders from a century ago, and talk to the Museum’s Head Archivist in the Canada Hall Train Station. At 11 a.m. in English and at 2 p.m. in French.

See how we record our events and activities for posterity. Our awardwinning photographers and videographers will be on hand to discuss some innovative aspects of their work. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Giant tulips
Your museum is part of the community! Watch as local artists participate in Tulip Festival fun by painting three of the giant tulips associated with the Festival. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Waterfall Court.

A museum without walls
Discover how we get the message out. As a museum without walls, we create numerous virtual exhibitions for Canadian Culture Online (CCO). CCO will be animating a kiosk throughout the day, featuring virtual exhibitions as well as digitized artifacts, publications and archival material. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
