World-renowned archaeologist to speak at the Museum of Civilization

Dr. Shimada is currently a professor of archaeology at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He continues to research several little-known episodes of Peru’s archaeological past, a task he began as a graduate student in the 1970s. His lifelong work has led to the writing of completely new chapters in northwestern Peru’s long ancient history, and a much better understanding of archaeological entities only vaguely known before he undertook his research. Because of his remarkable discoveries, many museum collections around the world were found to be incorrectly attributed to the earlier Moche or the later Chimu and Inca cultures. Forgotten for centuries, the Sicán culture now stands proudly in the bright sunshine of human accomplishment.

A thousand years ago in the northern Peruvian Andes, the Sicán people built an ingenious and complex civilization that produced some of the region’s finest gold and ceramic objects. Secret Riches showcases some of the most prized Sicán artifacts and sheds new light on this ancient culture, long unknown to the outside world and often eclipsed by the later empire of the Inca.

The exhibition is organized and circulated by the Nickle Arts Museum of the University of Calgary, in cooperation with the Sicán National Museum, Peru, and the National Institute of Culture of Peru.
