The Post Goes Pop Delivers Fun, Receives Extension

Gatineau, Quebec, February 5, 2008 — An exhibition described by visitors as fun, clever and entertaining will remain at the Canadian Postal Museum of the Canadian Museum of Civilization until March 8, 2009. The Post Goes Pop explores the use of postal imagery in popular culture through a wide range of exhibits and activities, including a karaoke booth — an especially big hit with young visitors and families.

The exhibition opened in November 2006, and was originally scheduled to close April 27, 2008.

“According to our estimates, attendance so far has surpassed the quarter-million mark,” said Bianca Gendreau, curator at the Canadian Postal Museum. “This ten-month extension will allow even more visitors to enjoy this delightful and educational experience.”

The Post Goes Pop highlights the wealth of postal imagery found in popular music, books, movies, TV programs, and advertising. The exhibition looks at where the imagery comes from, how it is used, and why it remains so powerful, even in an age of e-mail, text messaging and community mailboxes.

The exhibition’s many highlights include Cliff Claven’s postal uniform from the TV show Cheers; video clips from popular movies; and a karaoke booth, where visitors can sing along to Please Mr. Postman, Signed, Sealed, Delivered and other mail-related hits. Visitors can also use computers in the exhibition area to write and send e-postcards to friends and family. Throughout the exhibition, postal paraphernalia, both historical and contemporary, is displayed along with letters, packages and other relevant artifacts.

The Post Goes Pop continues until March 8, 2009 at the Canadian Postal Museum, located inside the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec.
