The Necessities of Life on the Museum of Civilization’s Silver Screen

Gatineau, Quebec, March 23, 2009 — Join us for a free screening of the Genie award-nominated movie, The Necessities of Life, at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on Wednesday, April 1. Benoît Pilon’s bittersweet film about the experiences of an Inuit hunter in a Quebec sanatorium in the 1950s has received eight nominations for the 2009 Genie Awards.

The Necessities of Life tells the story of Tivii, an Inuit hunter who has tuberculosis and must leave his northern home to recuperate in a sanatorium in Québec City. Living in a completely alien world far away from his loved ones and unable to speak French, Tivii becomes despondent. He then meets an orphan named Kaki, who has some knowledge of both worlds and who speaks both languages. By sharing his culture with Kaki and others, Tivii rediscovers his pride and energy. The movie featuring several Canadian cast members was filmed in Québec City and Iqaluit, Nunavut.

The Necessities of Life has been nominated in the following categories: Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Costume Design, Achievement in Direction, Achievement in Editing, Achievement in Music – Original Score, Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role and Original Screenplay.
