Pysanky: Decorating eggs, Ukrainian-style
Gatineau, Quebec, March 27, 2007 — On April 5, the Canadian Museum of Civilization welcomes adults to a special workshop on Pysanky, the Ukrainian tradition of decorating Easter eggs. Join local artist Luba Brown and discover the traditional techniques used to adorn eggs as you decorate one of your own.Pysanky egg decorating is a traditional Ukrainian craft. The craft’s roots go back thousands of years. Today, it consists of decorating eggs using beeswax and dyes. The symbols and colors are rich in meaning. Although many pre-date the arrival of Christianity, Christian symbolism was later layered into the designs. Pysanky is popular in Ukrainian households around Easter, when family and friends exchange eggs as gifts.
