Open House at the Canadian Museum of Civilization to celebrate the 150th Anniversary – May 14, 2006

Gatineau, Quebec, May 3, 2006 – On Sunday, May 14, the Canadian Museum of Civilization will kick off its 150th Anniversary with an Open House. Throughout the day, admission will be free and there will be activities for the entire family, including guided architectural tours, special activities at the Canadian Children’s Museum and Canadian Postal Museum, activities on the outdoor Plaza (weather permitting), a birthday cake, a barbecue, and more.

In addition to family activities, special 150th Anniversary highlights throughout the day include:

  • Guided tours, with curators and experts, to some of the Museum’s most popular and valuable artifacts, including totem poles, Champlain’s astrolabe and aboriginal ceramics.
  • A staged reading from the mid-nineteenth century, performed by the Museum’s resident theatre company, Dramamuse, and drawn from the writings of founder Sir William E. Logan and his contemporaries.
  • Information stations in the Grand Hall at which staff members will explain museum work ranging from research and interpretation to project management and conservation.
  • A new exhibition on the CMC’s 150-year history that profiles the Museum’s collections through the decades, with archival photographs, key artifacts and historical information.
  • Display of the postage stamp (issued May 11, 2006) commemorating the Museum’s anniversary.
  • An illustrated commemorative book presenting the history of the Canadian Museum of Civilization from its beginnings in 1856 to the present day; available at the boutique.

Please note: General admission to the Museum of Civilization is free on May 14. Admission charges apply to the PETRA special exhibition ($5); the Plaza BBQ ($5); and the usual charges apply for IMAX.
