The Promised Land Project: Why Are Americans Interested in African Canadians of the Mid-Nineteenth Century?

Based on a study of nineteenth-century black pioneers in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, this presentation of Boulou Ebanda de B’béri (associate professor, Communications Department, University of Ottawa) examines the role a multicultural group of blacks, whites and First Peoples played in ending slavery, both in North America and abroad.

Alon Nashman effortlessly draws us into the captivating magical landscape of Hans Christian Andersen’s chilling fairytale in this gorgeous, multimedia production. To the wonderfully atmospheric music of composer Patrick Cardy, played on stage by the Cecilia String Quartet, Nashman and dancer Kate Alton animate a world in which a brave little girl must face her fears and defy the odds, in order to rescue her best friend from a malicious, icy monarch. A wonderful treat for audiences ages 5 to 95! Join Dramamuse, the Museum’s own theatre company, for a lively interactive theatre experience. Warm up with spicy stories of earlier Canadian winters and interact with characters who, like your ancestors, found ways to come in from the cold and stay warm.
