My Union, My Life – Lecture by Jean-Claude Parrot

Gatineau, Quebec, September 12, 2006 — On Thursday, September 21, the Canadian Postal Museum in association with the Ottawa Historical Association, invites you to a lecture by Jean-Claude Parrot. Parrot will discuss his life and the book it inspired, My Union, My Life, which recently won the Robert S. Kenny Prize in Marxist and Labour/Left Studies.Parrot was the long-time leader of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

As chief union negotiator and union president he led CUPW through several contentious contract negotiations and national strikes. He first received public attention in 1975 when CUPW’s demand for a strong wage increase led to a long national strike. Five years later, he was jailed for 2 months when he defied back-to-work legislation. The outcome of the 1981 dispute saw the introduction of a 17-week maternity leave, a first for federal government employees. Parrot resigned from his position with CUPW in 1992 when he was elected Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress where he served for ten years.
