Museum of Civilization welcomes Moira McCaffrey as Director-General, Research and Collections

Gatineau, Quebec, November 19, 2007 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) has appointed an accomplished curator and museologist as its new Director-General, Research and Collections. Moira McCaffrey will oversee the Museum’s Archaeology, Ethnology, History, and Cultural Studies divisions, as well as its artifact and archival collections.

A specialist in Northeastern archaeology and ethnology, Ms. McCaffrey has served as Director of Research and Exhibitions at the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montréal since 1999. She was responsible for the growth, care and interpretation of the collections, produced exhibitions and publications on Canadian history, and managed a dynamic travelling exhibition program.

“Moira McCaffrey is an experienced curator, researcher and manager who brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to our senior team,” says Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC). “Her professional expertise will help the Canadian Museum of Civilization build on its reputation as one of the great museums in the world.”

Ms. McCaffrey has curated many exhibitions, including several produced in collaboration with Aboriginal partners, such as Living Words: Aboriginal Diplomats of the 18th Century and, most recently, Haida Art: Mapping an Ancient Language. She served as Project Director for the award-winning travelling exhibition Across Borders: Beadwork in Iroquois Life, a groundbreaking show that was presented at the CMC in 2001.

A fluently bilingual native of Montréal, Ms. McCaffrey holds an M.A. in archaeology from McGill University, and is working toward a Ph.D.,having recently written her doctoral dissertation titled The Architecture of Ancient Social Landscapes in Northern Quebec-Labrador. She has directed archaeological projects in northern Québec, western Labrador and on the Îles-de-la-Madeleine in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Ms. McCaffrey has published many scholarly papers in the fields of archaeology, ethnology, and museology, and has edited two books. She has also served on numerous advisory committees and is a past member of the Commission des biens culturels du Québec.

McCaffrey takes over from Dr. Stephen Inglis on Nov. 26, 2007. The CMC’s outgoing Director General, Research and Collections, has decided to focus on other responsibilities prior to his retirement.
