Last week to see exhibition on skating in Canada – 210,000 visitors and counting!

Gatineau, Quebec, March 26, 2007 — Visit the exhibition Lace Up: Canada’s Passion for Skating at the Canadian Museum of Civilization before it closes April 1, 2007. This very popular exhibition has already attracted over 210,000 visitors! Dr. Rabinovitch calls this exhibition a “triple Salchow of a crowd pleasing exhibition” about a particular aspect of the Canadian way of life. The exhibition is divided into two historical periods; the first looks at the European origins of skating and the establishment of skating activities in Canada to 1850; the second demonstrates how skating in Canada has become a socio-cultural element, integrated into the very fabric of Canadian society.

The primary theme behind Lace Up is the integration and spread of skating sports throughout Canadian society. The goal of this exhibition is not to examine the individual histories of figure skating, speed skating, or hockey, but rather to explore skating as a whole, examining the sport’s evolution, transformation, and establishment in Canada.

The exhibition features:

  • 60 different types of skates, showcasing their evolution from early skates made of bone to today’s high-tech skates;
  • The skates of the American figure-skating champion Jackson Haines — who came to Montreal in 1864 and enjoyed the adulation of thousands — and the skates worn by Canadian speed skating champion Gaétan Boucher for his 1984 gold medal race at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics;
  • Sixteenth-century Flemish paintings;
  • Historical photographs, videos, audio recordings, programs from various skating events, etc;
  • Elegant skating costumes from the nineteenth century.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Lace-Up before it closes on April 1, 2007.
