Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation welcomes Dr. Jack Granatstein to its Board of Trustees

Gatineau, Quebec, January 8, 2007 – The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC) is pleased to welcome Dr. Jack Granatstein to its Board of Trustees for a term of three years. Dr. Granatstein previously served the CMCC as Director and CEO of the Canadian War Museum (1998-2000), as Special Advisor to the Director of the War Museum (2000-2001), and as chair of the War Museum’s Advisory Council since 2001.

An expert in twentieth-century Canadian history, the military, public affairs and foreign policy, Dr. Granatstein was born in 1939 in Toronto, where he now resides. He studied at the Royal Military College in Kingston, the University of Toronto and Duke University, and served in the Canadian Army from 1956 to 1966. He then joined the History Department at Toronto’s York University, where he has been a Distinguished Research Professor of History Emeritus since taking early retirement in 1996.

Dr. Granatstein is an Officer of the Order of Canada who has served as an advisor to the federal government, and has chaired the Advisory Council of the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute since 2001. His more than 40 scholarly and popular books include Hell’s Corner: An Illustrated History of Canada’s Great War, 1914-1918 (2004), Who Killed Canadian History (1998), and The Good Fight: Canadians and World War II (1995). His latest effort is a book on foreign and defence policy, Whose War Is It? How Canada Can Survive in the Post-9/11 World, to be released this month.

A frequent media commentator on military matters, Dr. Granatstein has received several honorary degrees and other awards, including the Canadian Authors Association’s Lela Common Award for Canadian History (2006), the National History Society’s Pierre Berton Award for popular history (2004), and the Royal Society of Canada’s J.B. Tyrrell Historical Gold Medal (1992).

The CCMC is the Crown Corporation responsible for managing the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum, the country’s national museums of human history. One of the Corporation’s most important goals is to foster greater appreciation among Canadians of their shared history and heritage. The Board of Trustees, chaired by Claudette Roy, C.M., of Edmonton, Alta., is responsible for fulfilling the policies and for the overall financial management of the CMCC’s affairs.
