Gatineau, Quebec, May 11, 2007 — Join us at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on May 19 for a colourful and energetic presentation of traditional Chinese dances by the Oriental Dance Troupe of Ottawa. With fans, ribbons and scarf dances, this performance is sure to dazzle everyone! These traditional dances are presented in conjunction with the Museum’s newest exhibition, Treasures from China, on display until October 28, 2007.Chinese dance dates back nearly 5,000 years. In old China, dancers belonged to the slave class and their function was to perform in the courts for royalty and the nobles. During the Tang Dynasty the famous Silk Road was often travelled by Indians, Persians and others who came to trade silk. Buddhism thus found its way into China and had an enormous impact on Chinese culture. The Flying Apsara, a minor deity, plays music and is pictured in many murals from this period. The unique poses of the dancers represented on these murals influenced Chinese classical dance.
