Canadian Museum of Civilization welcomes new Executive Chef
Gatineau, Quebec, June 13, 2007 — What’s cooking at the Canadian Museum of Civilization? A superb new chef! Eurest Dining Services, a division of Compass Group Canada, has announced the appointment of Georges Laurier as the new Executive Chef at the Museum. He takes over from outgoing Executive Chef Ikuo Kanbayashi on June 2, 2007.
“Georges Laurier has a unique passion for great food, strict quality standards, and a wonderful sense of creativity and imagination,” says Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. “His remarkable talents as a chef will enhance the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s reputation as a culinary attraction in addition to a cultural one.”
Ironically, Laurier began his career right across the street from the Museum, at Café Henry Burger, and returned many years later to serve as the restaurant’s executive chef. In between, he worked at The Beau Rivage in Switzerland, as well as at top restaurants in France and New York City, before returning to Gatineau in 1995 to open his own charming French restaurant, Laurier sur Montcalm.
He took over the reins at Café Henry Burger in 2004, and led a team of 25 cooks. Laurier was responsible for not only the restaurant’s creative menu, but also an extensive catering division servicing the Wakefield Steam Train, the Lac Leamy Casino Fireworks Display, the Canadian Tulip Festival, and many government and private functions.
Since the acclaimed restaurant closed its doors last year, Laurier has led the culinary team at the Wakefield Inn and Spa, and taught future chefs at La Cité collégiale in Ottawa.
George Laurier is proud of Quebec’s culinary traditions and likes to showcase the very best in local ingredients in a cooking style he calls “contemporary French cuisine.” His skills promise to be an excellent fit for the Canadian Museum of Civilization, whose intimate Café du Musée serves a tantalizing menu of Canadian specialties.
Mr. Laurier will also be responsible for food services and catering both at the Museum of Civilization and the War Museum. With their spectacular architecture and settings, the Museums offer unique venues for important occasions, ranging from protocol ceremonies to banquets. Every year, they host many major high profile events gathering hundreds of people.
Starting in October, the Café du Musée will feature a fall menu designed by George Laurier. You are invited to come enjoy the menu’s feast of fall flavours starting October 9. In the meantime, come sample the Café du Musée’s new summer menu.
The Café du Musée, with its spectacular view of Parliament Hill, is open weekdays for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sundays for brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant can be reserved at other times for special groups or functions. Catered events can also be reserved at 819 776-7012.
