Canadian Museum of Civilization releases commemorative edition of national bestseller

Gatineau, Quebec, March 6, 2008 – The Canadian Museum of Civilization is celebrating the release of a commemorative edition of Malak Karsh’s 1990 publication entitled The Canadian Museum of Civilization: Photographs by Malak. The first book off press was presented to members of Malak’s family at an intimate event at the Museum today. This national bestseller is full of magnificent exterior and interior photos of the institution and is the Museum’s top-selling publication.

“The Museum’s publications are always of a high calibre, but Malak’s book of photography is particularly special, and continues to impress. This commemorative edition of his book highlights its value as an outstanding visual record of the building’s early years,” says Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. “We are honoured to present Barbara Karsh with the first copy of this edition of her husband’s book.”

Malak is best known as the eminent photographer of Canada’s Parliament Buildings. His famous image of the Parliamentary Library was reproduced on the former one-dollar bill. In 2001, the National Capital Commission dedicated in his honour a bed of tulips located on the grounds of the Canadian Museum of Civilization; Malak was the driving force behind the creation of the Tulip Festival held every year in Ottawa.

Born in Armenia, Malak emigrated to Canada in 1937 and went to work with his brother, renowned portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh. During his sixty-year photographic career, Malak (who always went by his first name, professionally) won a host of major awards and recognition for his landscape and architectural photography.

Canadian Museum of Civilization publications may be purchased at fine bookstores or directly from the Museum.
