African Beats and Beads – Groove to an African Beat and Take in the Beauty of African Beadwork

Gatineau, Quebec, August 10, 2006 — African beats and beads are the star attraction on Sunday, August 20, when the Canadian Museum of Civilization provides a groovin’ soundtrack for an unforgettable look at the magnificent beaded objects in the exhibition Beads of Life — closing soon on September 10, 2006. Percussionist El Hadji Mbaye will provide the beat with his traditional djembe drum, while a gorgeous array of beadworks provide the colour and texture for a special afternoon.

This concert is being held in connection with the exhibition Beads of Life: Eastern and Southern African Adornments. The exhibition features 185 exquisite pieces of jewellery and items of beaded clothing from South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Botswana, Sudan and Zimbabwe. All of the items come from Canadian collections, and this popular exhibition represents the first time works of African beadwork from various private, university and museum collections across Canada have been surveyed, and a selection of key examples brought together for display. Integral to the exhibition are personal testimonies and observations from Canadians of eastern and southern African origin on the meaning of beadwork today.

Over 165,000 people have visited this exhibition since it opened in April 2005. There is only a month to take in an artform that has particular resonance for certain African cultures, and can be enjoyed by people of every walk of life. Beads of Life: Eastern and Southern African Adornment will be presented at the Canadian Museum of Civilization until September 10, 2006.
