Growing Up with the Berenstain Bears – A new exhibition at the Canadian Children’s Museum

Gatineau, Quebec, May 24, 2006 — Since the Berenstain Bears made their first appearance in a 1962 picture book, children and parents have embraced the furry family and let their stories guide them in the greatest adventure of all — growing up! Opening this Saturday, May 27, at the Canadian Children’s Museum in Gatineau, a new touring exhibition called Growing Up with the Berenstain Bears brings the many memorable bear characters to life and close to home.

Children will enjoy playing out real-life dilemmas and situations in safe and, for many, familiar settings. The clubhouse, the kitchen, the playground, the living room, and even scary Skull Rock are featured in the exhibition, drawing young visitors into conversations and activities that will be a real delight, especially for those from 3 to 8 years old.

With the guidance of the Berenstain Bear characters, visitors explore experiences common and critical to growing up. The exhibition takes a page from the Berenstain Bear books, using the stories’ environments, choices, adventures and dilemmas to encourage children to role-play, experiment and problem-solve. Just as the Berenstains have been doing since 1962, the exhibition makes kids smile while learning about life’s lessons and providing adults with practical, down-to-earth guidance for handling the toughest parenting questions.

Growing Up with the Berenstain Bears is in the middle of a successful North American tour, and the Canadian Children’s Museum, part of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, is its only Canadian venue. The exhibition will be open seven days a week from now until September 10, 2006.

Growing Up with the Berenstain Bears will present plenty of opportunities to get to know the Bear Family and their creators, as visitors can learn about the authors, see early sketches and develop their own storyboard panel within a Bears book in progress. During the exhibition’s opening weekend on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, author and illustrator Mike Berenstain will be on hand to lead young visitors in sketching exercises and demonstrations and, of course, to read from some of his favourite Berenstain Bears books. Mike is the son of the Berenstain Bears’ original creators, Stan and Jan Berenstain. After Stan’s death in 2005 at the age of 82, Mike continued to work with Jan to create new books in the Berenstain Bears series.

Growing Up with the Berenstain Bears was produced by the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum for the Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative (YMEC), of which the Canadian Children’s Museum is the only Canadian member.
