Culture Days at the Museum: interactive events highlight national musical treasures and Nigerian drumming and storytelling

Gatineau, Quebec, September 22, 2016 — The Canadian Museum of History is inviting the public to celebrate Culture Days from Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 2, with two special musical-themed events: an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at rarely seen musical treasures in the National Collection and an interactive concert of traditional Nigerian drumming and storytelling.

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to go inside the Museum’s Objects Lab and get an up-close look at key musical artifacts and archives with curator Judith Klassen and conservator Emily Lin. Get a “Rush” by seeing Geddy Lee’s double neck Rickenbacker, the costume of Denis L’Espérance of César et les romains’ and a self-portrait by Joni Mitchell. The Museum will host four presentations: two in French and two in English. The activity is suitable for ages 10 and up. Learn how the centuries-old traditions of Nigerian storytelling with drumming strengthen social ties and bring communities together. This fun, hands-on demonstration will show youngsters a unique and time-honoured way to share news. This bilingual activity is suitable for the entire family. Admission is free.

Culture Days and Les Journées de la culture are celebrated yearly to highlight the importance of the arts and culture in Canada. For three days in September, hundreds of thousands of artists and cultural organizations come together and invite Canadians to participate in free, interactive and behind-the-scenes activities.
