Archival Materials
ONTARIO PUPPETRY ASSOCIATION COLLECTION — textual, graphic, film and sound records — 1929-1996 — *5,25m.
The Ontario Puppetry Association stemmed from the reunion in October 1956, of four provincial organizations: the Eastern Ontario Guild of Puppetry, the Toronto Guild of Puppetry, the South Western Ontario Guild of Puppetry and the “Community Programmes Branch”, a governmental department represented by George Merten. Once united, these four groups amounted to the highest membership ever in a puppetry group’s history, across North America. Among founding members were: Kenneth B. and Dorothy McKay, Arthur and Fern Stimson, Carol Hicks (Toombs), George Merten, Rodger Greig, Tom and Elsie Harrison, Ed Kendall, John and Linda Keogh.
The Association carried its roles of educating and sharing its various resources with members and the general public, by puppet and slide collections loans, publication of a regular newsletter (OPAL), and the successful planning of events such as festivals, workshops and conferences. This mission was greatly emphasized in 1980, year of the opening of the OPA Puppet Centre in North York, suburban Toronto; the Centre served as a Museum, housing the growing artifacts collections, scheduled exhibitions, activities, and an impressive documentation collection relating to the OPA. The Centre’s venture lasted until 1993, year of it’s closure. The OPA continues however to foster to puppetry arts and their progress, in Canada and elsewhere.
Apart from administrative documents, ranging from 1954 to 1992, the documents collection consists of several thematic file series: Canadian Puppeteers and Puppetry, International Puppeteers and Puppetry, Varied Puppetry Subjects of Interest, International Puppetry Associations, Canadian Puppetry Festivals and International Puppetry Festivals, Exhibitions held at the Puppet Centre (OPA). Among these series, some material created or accumulated prior to 1954 (prior to OPA’s existence) is to be found. These documents originate essentially from Rosalynde Osborne Stearn’s collection, donated to OPA during its administrative existence; this collection is linked to R.O. Stearn’s material held in the custody of McGill University Library, Rare Books Department. Rosalynde Stearn actively promoted puppetry arts in Canada in the first part of this century, namely producing one film “The Clouds”, in 1938 (in collection), and collaborating to numerous foreign reference publications (encyclopaedias, periodicals, etc.) on the subject of Canadian puppetry. She contributed to OPA’s development in various ways right from its’ early start.
A portion of the collection is unprocessed, and will be available for consultation in 1997 (see end note). The portion described above is accessible by appointment, by contacting Client Services at the Information Management Services Division, CMC. Automated cataloguing of the administrative and thematic file series will be completed during the year 1996.

JOHN E. CONWAY COLLECTION – textual, graphic, film and sound records – 1920-1988 – 0,22m.
Ontario puppeteer John E.Conway was a pioneer in Canadian television, from its’ very start. As the main character – Uncle Chichimus – featured in CBC public television’s first programme ever aired in September 1952 (in fact «Uncle Chichimus» was preceded only by the first televised news bulletin): «Uncle Chichimus and Hollyhock» (combined with the national weather bulletin, with Percy Saltzman), he became a landmark of Canadian public television.
He first practised as a career puppeteer while joining the Heddle Troupe of Marionettes during the 1930’s, his teenager years. In 1939, he took leave from high school to tour the United States with the re-named troupe: «Royal Canadian Puppet Ballet», until the outbreak of war. This interrupted the troupe’s activity, following this it was never revived – part of the Heddle puppet collection is now housed in CMC as part of the Conway collection. Conway joined the RCAF in 1942, serving in England until 1945. Upon his return to Canada, he completed an M.A. in English, and was offered a lecturing post at University of British Columbia where he stayed from 1948 to 1950; during these years he elaborated his scheme for the soon-to-be-famed «Uncle Chichimus» television show.
Early CBC executives favoured airing a Canadian content television puppet show, mainly because of the resounding success of the American show «Kukla, Fran and Ollie», mounted by professionnal puppeteer Burr Tillstrom and his assistant Fran Allison. John Conway was hired by CBC as a «contract player» sometime before television was effectively inaugurated, on September 8, 1952. Uncle Chichimus and Hollyhock was aired until June 1954. A few years after departing from CBC, Conway produced a series of 26 15-minute films based on the Chichimus cast of characters, called «The Adventures of Chichimus» (this between 1957 and 1961). The series did not succeed with Canadian and American television networks, however it was widely broadcast in other parts of the world (Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong); during this period he also presented live shows, notably in department stores (which often had performing stages back in those days).
From 1961 to 1966, the «Uncle Chichimus Show» was produced by CJOH, a new private television station in Ottawa. Conway retired from the media and entertainment scene in 1966, and reverted to teaching english in various Ottawa high schools, until 1982.
The John Conway document collection is now under the custody of CMC’s archival collection; graphic records include colour slides, colour photographs, and black and white photographs (including 39 8×10’s).
Film and sound records include five audiotape recordings (interviews), a 26-film series produced by John Conway free-lance, between 1957 and 1961 («The Adventures of Chichimus»), 9 miscellaneous films (mostly kinescopes), negatives (b & w) of film titles for the «Adventures», 1 vinyle recording (78 rpm, private production), and 3 half-tone printing blocks for the film catalogue of «Adventures of Chichimus».
Finally, textual records represent 17,5cm in linear extent (approximately 700 pages); materials include correspondence, agreements, promotional material related to various puppet performances and television contracts, lecture notes on puppetry, selected fan correspondence (1954-1966), patent agreements etc. for Conway’s puppet creations, press clippings, press releases and one scrap-book assembled by Suzanne Mess, costume designer for «Uncle Chichimus» (containing press clippings, press reviews and publicity programmes).
The Ontario Puppetry Association Collection (CMC reference no.R95-2) holds another part of the John Conway document collection (textual and graphic records); textual records and some graphic records have been processed as part of series «Canadian Puppeteers and Puppetry» (see John Conway file), some graphic records are still unprocessed.
Further reference to the John Conway document collection, along with the objects collection (costumes, puppets, etc.) is found in Philip Tilney’s «Documentation Report» prepared in 1989 (see Acc.#90-05, Box 533, File 1A). The collection is accessible by appointment, by contacting Client Services at the Information Management Services Division, CMC.
