Awesome History

Sunday, August 20
Canadian History Hall: The Hub, Canadian History Hall Lobby, Morning Star Mezzanine
10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Learn flint-knapping, Métis beadwork, finger weaving, and the art of upcycling during a family day of workshops inspired by stories in the Canadian History Hall.

Spend a day learning traditional, culturally significant skills reflecting themes from the Canadian History Hall’s three galleries, as you explore various historical periods. Take part in a flint-knapping workshop, and learn the age-old art of shaping stone into arrowheads and other tools. See examples of intricate Métis beading and let Métis artists show you how to make your own little beaded button to take home. All ages are welcome to learn finger weaving: a traditional Métis technique used to make ceintures fléchées. And in recognition of Depression-era resourcefulness — when families were forced to make do with whatever was available — mixed-media artist Krystyna Sadej will lead a hands-on activity in which you’ll create art using recycled materials.

Please note that all events are subject to change.
