Sugar Bowl

Earthenware sugar bowls are highly prized by collectors, possibly because relatively few of them have survived. This example, with the small dog resting on the lid, is remarkable because animal figures incorporated into Canadian earthenware are very rare. The manner in which the exterior of the bowl has been sculpted, coupled with the applied decoration, suggests that it may have been made by a member of the Brownscombe family. However, the shade of the clear glaze differs somewhat from other known examples, thereby making any positive attribution difficult.
