Pitcher and Basket

This small pitcher and oval basket, with the type of glaze and applied decoration often used by the Brownscombe family, are probably the products of the Kinloss operation. The little basket may have been made as a gift or for a special occasion. John Brownscombe Sr. emigrated from England in 1843 and started a pottery near Port Hope, Ontario. In 1852, family members started a second pottery, in Peterborough, Ontario. John Brownscombe Jr. left Port Hope in 1870 and, with his sons, set up a new pottery in Kinloss Township, Bruce County, Ontario.
