Chest of Drawers

This chest was passed down in the Honsberger family of Jordan, Ontario. Like the other similar examples, CMH 2007.22.161 and CMH 2007.22.299, it is in its original condition. It is signed by its maker, Albert Lane, and dated “Feb 29th 1844 Leap Year.” Although the overall form is similar to that of CMH 2007.22.161, the backboard has evolved into a gallery, the edge of the top is slightly rounded and the upper cove moulding is enlarged, as are the overall dimensions. As economic prosperity increased over the mid- to late 1800s, so too did the size of many houses and furnishings.
