Chest of Drawers

This chest, as well as CMH 2007.22.276 and CMH 2007.22.299, provides insight into the evolution of Niagara Region furniture between the 1830s and 1860s. All three are in the Pennsylvania Chippendale tradition with modifications marking changing tastes. This example is the smallest of the three and incorporates a modest backboard that would have been a fashionable feature in the 1830s. The ebonized feet and trim contrast with the richness of the cherry case. The back of the bottom drawer is marked with the date 1836, the probable date of manufacture.
