Through the Lens Featuring Suuhk! Suuhk! Hockey

Plan Your Visit

This documentary about a minor hockey tournament in Val-d’Or reveals how an annual sports competition brings together Cree families and communities in northern Quebec.

National Aboriginal History Month and our Hockey exhibition make a fitting backdrop for a screening of Suuhk! Suuhk! Hockey, a documentary about hockey and community. “Suuhk! Suuhk!” — meaning “Go! Go!” — is what James Bay Cree parents call out to encourage their children on the ice. It’s a phrase heard every spring in Val-d’Or, where one of the largest minor hockey tournaments in Canada takes place every Easter weekend.

Film director Vincent Audet-Nadeau sets out to explore the impact of hockey in northern Quebec and discovers that, for the Cree, the Val-d’Or tournament is much more than a sports competition. It’s a multi-generational cultural event that brings isolated communities together to socialize with other families and to unite as one nation.

Following the screening, there will be a question-and-answer session with the film’s producer. For audiences ages 14 and up. In French.
