Solve the mystery of the lost Franklin Expedition and find the ships’ final resting places, using a giant map, Inuit stories and other clues.

It took more than 150 years and 60 search expeditions to find the Franklin Expedition ships Erebus and Terror. How long will it take you to solve the mystery? Visit the exhibition Death in the Ice – The Mystery of the Franklin Expedition to learn about the 129 men lost in the Arctic in 1845, as well as various theories about their fate. Then pretend you’re an underwater archaeologist using Inuit oral history, geographical tools and other evidence to locate the wrecks.

Explore Canada’s Arctic on a giant floor map. Work with your family to find clues in Franklin’s original orders from the British Admiralty, and in handwritten notes and charts. Learn about the crucial role of traditional Inuit stories, passed down for generations, in the eventual discovery of the wrecks.

These activities are designed for Franklin enthusiasts and families with children ages 8 and up.
