A Simple Game (1875–1905)

Since the dawn of time, people have played games using sticks and balls. But it was in Montréal, on a cold and frosty night in March 1875, that McGill University students faced off in the first hockey match ever played indoors to set rules. Hockey would never be the same again.

The game was originally played only by the wealthy. Eventually, however, it spread from one end of the country to the other, blurring class and gender lines along the way. A team from the Yukon even crossed the entire country to compete for the most prestigious hockey cup in the world, created in 1892 by Governor General Lord Stanley.

This is the story of hometown dreams born on frozen ponds.

This documentary is suitable for children aged 7 years and older.
