Family Day becomes Flag Day as kids can go on a flag scavenger hunt, master some flag crafts, and hear the stories behind Canada’s Maple Leaf flag.
Spend Family Day exploring the Museum, celebrating our official flag, and listening to stories about Canadian flag history. Challenge children to find the Maple Leaf flag and the flags of other countries in a flag scavenger hunt that could earn them a flag button. Assemble your own patriotic bunting to take home. Meet Robert Labonté, the man who braves the weather at the top of the Peace Tower every morning to raise the Canadian flag. Listen as special guest Joan O’Malley describes sewing the red-and-white Maple Leaf prototype that would become our national flag on February 15, 1965. The sewing machine she used for her historic contribution to Canada’s identity will also be on display, providing a sneak preview of one of the star attractions of the Canadian History Hall, opening on July 1.
