Fabrications: Stitching Ourselves Together

1999-2000: Canadian History Galleries

(borrowed from the Red Deer & District Museum)

This exhibit features 23 wedding dresses sewn by Lorraine Church of Lacombe, Alberta between 1950 and 1995. The exhibit presents three voices: the curator, Dr. Kathryn Church as daughter and sociologist; Lorrraine Church as designer and seamstress; and the voices of her “customers”: the friends, family, and neighbours who co-created the wedding dresses. The exhibit honours the work of the seamstress while exploring larger issues of gender and generations.
