Steamship (weather vane)

By Randall Smith; Ingomar, Nova Scotia; between 1970 and 1976; wood, plastic, wire, string, paint; 150 x 53 x 5 cm. CMC 77-311

This painted wood weather vane represents a steamship. The extreme off-centre position of the boat on its spindle made it an accurate gauge of wind direction. Although the boat motif is popular in Maritime folk art, it is rarely found in weather vanes.
