A Philatelic Mystery

Representing a republic

These stamp essays are believed to have been created to legitimize Louis Riel's provisional government during the Red River Rebellion (1869-1870). They may also date from the Northwest Rebellion (1885). The roughly sketched female figure featured on the stamp is believed to be Marianne, the embodiment of the French Republic, and a symbol of freedom and revolution.
