It was over breakfast with Postmaster General James Morris that engineer, draftsman and surveyor Sanford Fleming suggested the beaver as a motif for the first Canadian postage stamp. The beaver represented the industry, ingenuity and perseverance of our young country. The Three Pence Beaver was issued on April 23, 1851.
