COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS DRAW US TOGETHER AND DEFINE OUR LOYALTIES

Almost everyone has experienced the feeling of being swept up by a crowd's enthusiasm. Sports competitions, major civic anniversaries, important historical events, and religious and state pageants give us an opportunity to set aside our daily routines. They become high points in our lives.

Canada's centennial year was such a time. Pride in past achievements was combined with an awareness that the future called for a new meaning for the word "Canadian." The joy and anxiety of 1967 were inherent in the effort to create a distinctive identity for ourselves in the world community.
