Mussallem stands out as a primary leader in the nursing profession in the second half of the twentieth century. She served as a surgical nurse in the Second World War; was the first Canadian nurse to receive a doctorate (1962); served as the Executive Director of the Canadian Nurses Association (1962-1981); and was the President of the Victorian Order of Nurses (1989-1991).
