Associated Medical Services Inc.

Canada’s first physician-sponsored, private provider of health insurance, Associated Medical Services Inc. (AMS) was founded by Dr. Jason Hannah and was incorporated in April 1937 as a non-profit corporation. AMS offered group and individual enrolment into a plan for a premium that paid for a specific range of medical services in Ontario. Unlike existing group insurance plans, AMS made specific provision for individual subscribers such as the self-employed, farmers and professionals so that they would have a private physician of their choice, diagnostic services, hospital care including surgery, as well as maternal and child care and home visiting. Advertising “Complete Medical Care for 7 c[ents] per day” (C. David Naylor, Private Practice, Public Payment: Canadian Medicine and the Politics of Health Insurance, 1911–1966 [Montréal and Kingston: McGill–Queen’s University Press, 1986], p.101), AMS was very successful and, by 1942, had 10 offices and 20,000 members.
