The family usually owned land, a home and several outbuildings. Normally, there would be enough land to include a field for grazing animals and at least one garden to grow enough root vegetables to last through most of the winter. It was on this land and in these buildings that the majority of the family's other possessions were stored and used. A significant number of items, however, were used away from the premises; near and on the water, and in the woods and open country.
