Militia shako, 13th Canadian Militia, 1869-1878 The shako originated in the 1700s with the flat-topped, cylindrical cap worn by Magyar troops in Austria. More armies adopted the shako than probably any other military head-dress. This style of shako was worn by volunteer militia troops during the Fenian raids in Canada (1866 1870).
