Loyal Orange Lodge crown, Iroquois, late 1800s
This fascinating head-dress appears to be unique — made by a Native person for a fraternal organization — and was probably worn for parades or for secret rituals. The technique of using raised beading on red woollen cloth is in the eastern Iroquois tradition. The headband is covered with Orange Order symbols, including King William of Orange on his white horse, and biblical symbols, such as the Ark of the Covenant, the ladder of Faith, Hope and Charity, and the menorah.
