Elizabeth Street playground, ca 1913. The playground was popular with Italian and Jewish immigrant children in The Ward.

The men worked in many different kinds of jobs, but most were either labourers or tradesmen. Laundries were common, and Monteleone immigrants often set up shoe-shine and repair shops. The women ran boarding houses and took care of their families. Large groups of extended families and townsfolk often lived together in the same house.
