Sources of Inspiration for Costumes

Allegorical Characters

Allegorical or emblematic costumes were worn by women to represent abstract concepts or objects. A contemporary-style dress was made in an appropriate texture and colour, and lavish trimmings were added to render the idea.

Miss Yielding as Night
The most popular of all allegorical characters was Night, who was usually represented in black tulle spangled with silver stars, and wearing a crescent moon on her head.
