Made of blown, thick bottle glass, this rolling pin was probably brought to Canada by an English family named Payne in the early twentieth century. Many thousands of immigrants arrived from England in this period. Glass rolling pins could be water-cooled before rolling out chilled pastry.

A young Irish couple brought this carving set with them, when they left for Canada in 1912. It was one of their wedding gifts in 1910. The knife, fork and knife-sharpener were made in Sheffield, England, and packed in a velvet-lined box. Both knife and fork were silver-plated.

This polished brass samovar was brought to Canada by a former Czarist cavalry officer who escaped from Russia after the October Revolution of 1917. Samovars of this quality were used for serving tea in grand households before the Communists seized power.
