Leaving Vietnam - Resettlement

 
Although Vietnamese refugees had a choice of countries to which they could apply, their acceptance was subject to that country's approval. They were interviewed by officials from the host country and then had to wait for a response. News of acceptance brought jubilation - and envy. Grown men and women danced for joy at the prospect of a new life, one that would be free of fear and prosecution.

Canada was a favourite choice of destination because of the freedom it offered. Australia, France and the United States also took in a large number of refugees.
