Lettera d’emigrante
PRIMA PARTE
Dalla mia bella terra son partito
E all’estero son’ già per lavorar
Penso alla vecchia mamma che ho lasciato
E per vederla ancor vorrei tornar
Figlio mio, da ché sei partito
Non c’è più pace qui nel mio cuor
Ed aspetto che venga quel giorno
Che ritornare io ti rivedrò
Mia cara mamma non potrò tornare
Perché lontano ancor dovrò restar
Molto denaro debbo io guadagnare
In un bel pacco te lo spedirò
Mia cara mamma, oggi ho ricevuto
SECONDA PARTE
Mia cara mamma, debbo confessarti
Che tengo un’altra donna dentro il cuor
Io voglio bene tanto a Carmelina
E quando torno io la sposerò
Caro figlio, io questo tuo amore
Per Carmelina sapevo già
È una brava ragazza e mi piace
Come una figlia per me lei sarà
Mia cara mamma, son ben sistemato
E del denaro ti potrò mandar
Io qui per ora faccio economia
Perché al ritorno mi dovrò sposar
Caro figlio, io questo denaro
Che tu mi mandi conserverò
E così, quando tu tornerai
Puoi coronare il tuo sogno d’amore
Mia cara mamma, penso a Carmelina
E a casa io potrò già ritornar
Ti prego di avvertire a Carmelina
Che ‘ssieme a te la voglio riabbracciar
Caro figlio, la tua Carmelina
L’abito bianco ha pronto già
Ed insieme con me a braccia aperte
Che al tuo ritorno ti accoglierà
The Emigrant’s Letter
PART ONE
I left my beautiful land
And I’m already working abroad
I think of my aging mother who I left
And I’d like to return to see her again
My son, since you left
There has been no peace in my heart
And I wait for the day
You will return
My dear mother, I can’t return
Because I still must stay away
I have to earn a lot of money
To be happy together with you
Oh, what is money worth, my son?
I’m sad without you
I always pray to the Virgin Mary
To protect you from harm
My dear mother, it’s never sunny here
This sky is always dark and grey
It’s always cold, there’s no warmth
This climate is what makes me suffer
With my hands and a crochet hook
I have already made a sweater
It’s a Christmas gift
That I will send you in a nice package
My dear mother, today I received
That beautiful sweater you made me
I’m so happy, and today I wore it
I swear, I don’t feel the cold anymore
Dear son, you make me so happy
If only you could always write like this
If I could, I would send you the beautiful sun
This lovely sun that is always here
PART TWO
My dear mother, I must confess
That I have another woman in my heart
I’m in love with Carmelina
And when I return, I’ll marry her
Dear son, I already knew
About your love for Carmelina
She’s a fine girl and I like her
She will be like a daughter to me
My dear mother, I’m doing well here
And will be able to send you some money
Here, for now, I’m living frugally
Because when I return I’m supposed to get married
Dear son, this money you sent
I’m going to keep it for you
So when you return
Your dream of love will come true
My dear mother, I think of Carmelina
And I fear she is tired of waiting
She has already written that she always cries
Because she can no longer be apart from me
Dear son, don’t be afraid
Carmelina will wait for you
That’s why your mother is here
I can lovingly watch over her
My dear mother, the day has come
And I can finally come home
Please tell Carmelina
That I want to embrace you both
Dear son, your Carmelina
Has her white dress ready
And both of us will welcome you
With open arms when you return
