In 1981, Cabinet approved the
transfer of the existing Museum to a new building to be
constructed to meet its needs. In 1983, the Trudeau government
decided that Parc Laurier in Gatineau would be the location of
the new facility. Later that year, following Cabinet's approval
of the design, site excavation began. Construction was underway
in 1984.
