The Gentle Caress of Oil
Israelites bathed regularly and rubbed oil, often perfumed, on their
bodies, to protect themselves from the hot, dry climate. Aside from
strict hygienic requirements, the Torah encouraged people to purify
themselves with water, especially after illness.
