artist Introduction

We would like this site to highlight the extraordinary heritage bequeathed to us by Canadian rug hookers for more than 150 years. We want to share the skills and artistry, as well as the creative imagination these artists employed in decorating and brightening their homes.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization is proud to present part of its collection of close to 400 hooked rugs, most of them from Eastern Canada. In addition to viewing some of the works, this site takes you back to the beginnings of hooking, which was a domestic skill before it became appreciated as decorative art.

We also invite you to hook your own rugs. Thanks to the expertise of contemporary artists, you will learn basic hooking techniques, fabric preparation, and ways of dyeing materials.
