In the late 1970s, a new culture emerged from the heart of American ghettos — hip hop. This wave, which includes rap, graffiti, breakdancing and the artistry of the DJs, denounces the social reality experienced by Blacks and is slowly invading the Francophone world, where it is growing in popularity. Disc jockey competitions appeared in Canada around 1990. They test how well the DJs know the repertoire, and their ability to scratch (rotate records back and forth) or make the most amazing switches from one record to another, sometimes adding commentary as well. The audience judges these competitions. |
